Description of project
Our task for this project was to find how proteins in our body causes diseases. The disease we researched was alzhiemers disease. Alzheimers affects the mind by blocking the nerve cells from being transferred across the brain. We researched how protein folding works and also how it affects people through a variety of diseases. What we did for the project was make a poster to show how the protein folding relates to Alzheimers disease.
Content
DNA- deoxyribonucleic acid, a self-replicating material present in nearly all living organisms as the main constituent of chromosomes. It is the carrier of genetic information. In this project, protein synthesis starts with the unzipping of DNA
Translation- A the first step in protein synthesis
mRNA- The messenger RNA, brings the code to the codons codon/anti-codon- What attaches to the mRNA and carries the amino acids
Transcription- the second step in Protein Synthesis, where mRNA becomes polypeptide
Ribosome- the mRNA attaches to the ribosome and the polypeptide chain attaches to it.
tRNA- the transfer RNA attaches to the mRNA and the codons attach to it polypeptide chain-chain of polypeptides that are folded to make protein
folding- the polypeptide chain is folded by going into alpha-helixs and beta-sheets, then domains then proteins
protein- A molecule composed of polymers of amino acids joined together by peptide bonds.
Reflection
In my opinion this project went very well but like all projects there are still room for improvement. The time management factor in this project went very well. We worked hard right off the bat so that caused for some free time at the end. Another positive is that our presentation went well. We all know what we were going to say and we said it.
Some negatives in this project was that in our free time was very non academic. When we finished we played a lot of games and I deffinetly think that we could have done much more academic stuff.
